About Alow & Aloft
Welcome to Alow & Aloft! I’m Jeremy Wood, the artist and creator behind this unique illustration and design company, born from my lifelong love for the sea and aviation. Here, you’ll find hand-drawn maritime and aviation illustrations that celebrate the rich histories of both worlds.
My Journey
Growing up on the north coast of California, the ocean was more than just a backdrop; it was a way of life. My parents nurtured my love for the sea from an early age, spending many days crabbing, fishing, and digging for clams.
Then, one weekend, our small airport was visited by the Collings Foundation, featuring two historic WWII aircraft; a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Consolidated B-24 Liberator. This experience ignited my lifelong obsession with airplanes, and that very day I began teaching myself to draw, inspired by the beauty and engineering of aviation.
My career has taken me on a diverse path, from serving as a Nuclear Machinist’s Mate aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan, to crafting classical guitars. I’ve sailed as First Mate on a classic wooden sailing vessel and maintained firefighting aircraft in Alaska. Through all these varied experiences, art has remained my constant companion, guiding my creative journey.
A pivotal moment came when I was working in aviation maintenance in California. Driving across the airfield, I was thrilled to spot the very B-17 and B-24 that had captivated me as a child. This reconnection reaffirmed that my journey was destined to intertwine with my love for aviation and the sea.
The Heart of Alow & Aloft
So, how did Alow & Aloft come to be? It stems from my desire to blend my artistic talents with my passions for sailing and aviation. The name itself reflects this duality: “Alow” signifies the maritime elements, celebrating classic vessels and symbols of nautical history, while “Aloft” looks to the skies, to the incredible aircraft that have made aviation history.
My artwork features clean, timeless, pen-and-ink illustrations that capture the essence of historical ships and iconic airplanes. Whether it’s a compass rose on a water bottle or a classic warbird on a t-shirt, each piece is designed to be both beautiful and functional, enriching everyday life with art that tells a story.
